Surviving the Messy Middle: Perimenopause Support, Skincare for Women 40+ and Parenting Teenagers Getting Ready to Fly the Nest

When’s the last time you had lunch or coffee with your sister or bestie? By the time you finished your latte (or espresso martini), you likely walked away with a survival guide to feel human again and look fabulous.

I’m Nancy—wife, mom, former nurse, and founder of Surviving the Messy Middle. Think of this blog like that long-overdue coffee date with your best friend. This is your go-to spot for real-life survival tips in the season of raising teens, caring for aging parents, and still trying to feel (and look) like yourself.

Why I Started This Blog (The "Messy Middle" Story)

I recently reunited with college friends, laughing about the days before cell phones captured the evidence of our youthful escapades. But the conversation quickly turned to the reality of our current season: navigating a teenager’s side-eye, bracing for the empty nest, and caring for aging parents.

We’re in the stage of life where we feel 22, but if we sneeze too hard, we throw out our backs and need a chiropractic adjustment. We need our girlfriends most right now, but between six calendar invites and a blood oath just to grab coffee, it’s hard to connect. That’s why I started this space—to bring the "coffee date" to you.

Holistic Wellness & Perimenopause Support

As a former nurse, I know that midlife wellness isn't just about 'eating well'—it’s about listening to our bodies and finding the hormonal and physiological support we need. In this section, we dive into simple, science-backed rituals that support perimenopause and menopause health.

We focus on real-life solutions for:

Affordable Skincare for Women Over 40

The Beauty section is dedicated to finding high-performance products that work for mature and sensitive skin without requiring a second mortgage. I feature tried-and-true favorites like Dime Beauty, focusing on hydration, skin barrier support , and clean ingredients.

Parenting Teens & The Empty Nest Transition

In Mom Life & Humor, we embrace the beautiful chaos of raising teenagers, managing demanding careers, and rediscovering yourself as your kids get ready to fly the nest. Whether it’s navigating the "launch" or finding your own identity again, we do it one coffee (or tea) at a time.

Grab your mug, exhale, and scroll awhile. This is your space to laugh, learn, and feel a little more human again.

Hydrating Skincare Routine for Sensitive Skin

Once I peeked at the ingredient list, I changed my mind The Gentle Jelly Cleanser is formulated with coco glucoside, a plant-derived surfactant (that’s the stuff that creates bubbles and lifts away dirt and oil). Unlike the cleansers that strip your skin and leave you feeling like the Sahara Desert, this one actually lives up to its name—it left my face soft, smooth, and dare I say… comfortable.
